Description

Cartorhynchus lenticarpus was a small, amphibious marine reptile that lived around 248 million years ago during the Early Triassic period.

Measuring about 40 centimeters in length, it had a compact body, paddle-like limbs, and flexible wrists—features that suggest it was well-adapted for both swimming and movement on land.

Unlike later ichthyosaurs, Cartorhynchus had a short snout and no teeth, implying it may have fed by suction, possibly on soft-bodied prey.

Discovered in what is now China, this species is considered a transitional form, shedding light on the early evolution of marine reptiles after the end-Permian mass extinction.
