Description
Ophthalmosaurus icenicus was a sleek, fast-swimming ichthyosaur from the Late Jurassic seas of what is now Europe.
Known for its enormous eyes—the largest relative to body size of any known vertebrate—it hunted in deep or dimly lit waters, using exceptional vision to track prey such as fish and squid.
Its streamlined, dolphin-like body and powerful tail fin enabled rapid, energy-efficient swimming.
Ophthalmosaurus had narrow, elongated jaws filled with small, conical teeth suited for gripping slippery prey.
Fossils suggest it was an agile predator capable of long dives. Its anatomy reflects a highly specialized marine reptile perfectly adapted to a life of continuous pursuit.
