Description

Protostega gigas was a giant marine turtle that lived during the Late Cretaceous period in the Western Interior Seaway of North America.

Reaching lengths of over 3 meters, it was one of the largest sea turtles ever to exist.

Unlike modern sea turtles, Protostega had a reduced, leathery shell rather than a fully hardened carapace, making it lighter and more agile in the water.

Its long, powerful flippers allowed it to swim efficiently through open seas.

It likely fed on soft-bodied prey such as jellyfish and squid, sharing its environment with large marine reptiles like mosasaurs and plesiosaurs.
