Description
Kosmodraco dakotensis was a large semi-aquatic reptile that lived during the Paleocene Epoch, roughly 60 million years ago, in what is now North America.
It belonged to the choristoderes, an extinct group of crocodile-like reptiles that survived the mass extinction which ended the age of dinosaurs.
Reaching an estimated length of 3–5 meters (10–16 feet), Kosmodraco possessed a broad, flattened skull with a short, powerful snout adapted for catching fish and other aquatic prey.
Its raised eyes and nostrils suggest an ambush-hunting lifestyle similar to modern crocodilians. Fossils reveal a highly specialized and unusual freshwater predator.
