Among the Seven Oligarchs of Zerexis, few inspire less fear and yet command more frustration than Governor Ha’Kor. A half-human, half-Molanid hybrid, Ha’Kor was bred for greatness—engineered from birth to be stronger, faster, and sharper than his peers. But fate, as it so often does, played its cruel joke: Ha’Kor, with all his gifted potential, is undeniably, incurably lazy.
Where his fellow Oligarchs rule with iron fists and sharpened guile, Ha’Kor drifts through his dominion on the currents of inherited power, sustained not by ambition but by the vast wealth of his lineage. A ruler in name only, he prefers opulent lounges to war rooms, reclining in gilded chambers while his advisors tend to the tedious business of governance. Bureaucracy bores him. Conflict tires him. Even cruelty—a favored pastime of his peers—strikes him as a great deal of effort. While his tentacles are far less bloodstained than those of his counterparts, his indifference is no less lethal. Where tyranny commands, apathy allows.
Always within reach is his canister of liquid kenalym, a rare and volatile narcotic that grants fleeting moments of psychic foresight. It is the one indulgence he refuses to forgo, the one thing that stirs him to action. Under its influence, Ha’Kor can anticipate his adversaries’ next moves with uncanny precision, his dulled mind momentarily sharpened into something resembling brilliance. But the drug exacts its toll. With each dose, his dependence deepens, his body withers, and his already tenuous grasp on responsibility weakens further.
Those who serve him whisper that it is not his enemies who will destroy him, but his own inertia—that one day, the kenalym will take more than it gives, and the lethargic titan of Zerexis will finally succumb to the weight of his own indifference. But for now, Ha’Kor drifts along as he always has, comfortably numb in the seat of power, seeing the future yet doing nothing to change it.
