The Mormo, a vicious female entity of the ancient greek used to frighten children, whose name is perhaps connected with Latin formido (‘fear’). Similar to other bogeymen like Empusa and Gello. Her name, possibly related to the Latin word for "fear," was used to discourage misbehavior and instill fear in children. Some accounts even depict her as a queen of the Laestrygones the race of man-eating giants, who lost her own children and thus became a child-murderer. The variant mormolyce translates to "terrible wolves", with the stem -lykeios meaning "of a wolf".
