While the Red-Marked Guards garrison the Great Wall, their taller, swifter, and more formidable counterparts—the White-Marked Guards—are often dispatched alone under imperial decree or at the behest of New Army commanders, Banner generals, or Green Standard colonels. Leading elite squads drawn from both the New Army and the Guard camps, they venture deep into the Western frontiers, Eastern seas, northern jungles, or uninhabited wastes to execute critical missions: reclaiming fallen fortresses, assassinating nascent Drifting Sand Nobles, curbing the influence of a corrupted prince's descendants, or razing fledgling Avian-tree Nest churches.

Beyond the foundational mercury-channeling surgeries, the Imperial Taoist Temples employ a proprietary technique to infuse mercury into the marrow and skull, allowing the "infant spirit" within the quicksilver to aid in combat. This agonizing secondary procedure ensures divine purity envelops them and loyalty remains uncorrupted—at a cost. Many perish during the operation from neural rupture or mercury eruptions, yet for these failures, death is mercy. Those who survive but fail endure unrelenting torment as the liquid metal courses destructively through their bodies, their screams silenced by ravaged vocal cords. Only the Sect-Liturgy Bureau's 49-day "slow execution" grants them release.

Successful candidates become novice White-Marked Guards, still unworthy of the full White Armor. Veterans too aged to bear the armor’s weight are also reassigned here. Unlike pure White Guards, those operating beyond the northern capital cloak their armor in protective suits and don darkened visors to hide faces hollowed by mercury erosion. This serves both practicality for covert operations and symbolism—distinguishing themselves from full White Guards—while ensuring their potential deaths in desolate lands never tarnish the throne’s dignity."
