The warband doesn't follow them because they're the strongest.
They follow them because they've gone further than anyone else and still know your name.
Most who walk the path of excess dissolve into it. They stop being people and start being appetites - stumbling, rutting, consuming, eventually mutating into something that used to have a face. It's a beautiful end, if you believe in that sort of thing. A complete surrender. The self burned away by sensation until what's left is pure, mindless devotion made flesh.
These five didn't dissolve. That's what makes them terrifying.
The Commander has tasted things that broke the sanity of everyone who witnessed them alongside. They came back sharper. The helm is not ceremony - it's the last piece of armour still bothered with, because the rest stopped feeling like anything a long time ago. The Commander leads not by restraint, but by precision. Every transgression catalogued. Every sin ranked by utility. Every door mapped to the particular key that opens it. When that pistol is raised, there is no anger behind it. Only interest.
The Standard Bearer carries the warband's icon above a bare torso - collar at the throat, thorned flail in the free hand, a body marked by rituals that don't bear describing in anything shorter than a confession. The banner means: we chose this, we know what it costs, and we're still here. It is planted in the ground of every battlefield they take. It is the last thing a great many people see.
The Champion is the one you notice right before you stop noticing anything. Skull at the shoulder, serrated blade loose in one hand, the specific expression of someone for whom violence ceased to be a duty and became, some years ago, an enthusiasm. The Champion has been offered mercy twice. Both times, found it genuinely confusing.
The Medic keeps the warband functional enough to sin again tomorrow. The instruments serve purposes that exist at the intersection of pain and ecstasy - vials organised, blade sterile, mask hiding a face that has watched too many threshold moments with professional detachment. The Medic decides who gets to keep going. That is, in the warband's theology, the highest form of power there is.
The Comms Officer routes signal through flesh and ether alike - kit bristling with antennae, goggles reading frequencies no Imperial device was built to receive. The whole warband's nerve endings mapped into a single network, tended with the intimacy of someone who understands that information is the most invasive touch of all. That knowledge has never once been used with mercy.
Together they are the cult's spine - minds clear enough, and corrupt enough, to hold the whole ecstatic catastrophe together. The rank and file chase sensation until they mutate into something the Codexes refuse to classify. These five watch, direct, and occasionally decide which direction the mutation goes. If they find you interesting, consider yourself fortunate. If you survive being interesting to them, consider yourself exceptional.
The path ends in damnation or apotheosis. The difference, they will tell you, is mostly a matter of talent.
