The German Army were early adopters of sniping techniques, quickly recognizing the value of sharpshooters in trench snipers were often selected from Jäger units due to their marksmanship skills and experience in reconnaissance. From the onset of the war, German snipers used advanced optics for precision shooting, made by Zeiss, Hensoldt, and Oigee, which produced some of the best optical equipment of the time. The scopes had magnification levels ranging from 2.5x to 6x and gave German snipers a distinct advantage over their Allied counterparts until around 1917, when the Allies caught-up.
