Description

Janjucetus hunderi was an early toothed baleen whale from the Oligocene epoch, around 25 million years ago, discovered in Victoria, Australia.

Unlike modern baleen whales, it had sharp teeth and likely hunted fish and squid, bridging the evolutionary gap between ancient toothed whales and today’s filter feeders.

Measuring about three meters long, Janjucetus had a powerful jaw, large eyes positioned for binocular vision, and a streamlined body suited for active pursuit predation.

Its discovery provided key insight into whale evolution, revealing how early mysticetes retained predatory traits before developing baleen plates and transitioning to filter feeding in later lineages.
