Description

Xiphactinus audax was a giant predatory fish that lived during the Late Cretaceous Period, about 100–66 million years ago, in the ancient seas that once covered North America.

Reaching lengths of up to 6 meters (20 feet), it was one of the largest bony fish of its time.

Its streamlined body, powerful tail, and large jaws lined with sharp teeth made it a formidable hunter.
Fossils have revealed remarkably preserved stomach contents, including entire fish swallowed whole.

Despite its fearsome appearance, Xiphactinus was not a dinosaur but a marine fish that dominated the oceans alongside mosasaurs, plesiosaurs, and sharks.
