A Sun Elf with nothing left to lose. His family, his people, his culture: all were swallowed by the evanescent maw of Seroca, their minds ensnared by the Spawn’s strings. The entire tribe of Sun Elves that he once belonged to have now become the very same Serocan cultists that seek to erode the sanctuary of Hinatal. Having tried to spend the last half a decade warning the Hinatali, he now comes face to face with his people once again as they make their move against the gilded city.

Hailing from the Osmari tribe of the nomadic Sun Elves, Vilryn was a renowned warrior among his people: a valiant defender who drove off beasts of the wild and bands of raiders. Life in his tribe was difficult, but he and his people were happy. The Osmari tribe, unlike most other Sun Elven tribes, were deeply militaristic, combat being instilled in the males from a young age, with even the females taught the ways of sword and spear before marriage. For them, this tradition was the norm: it ensured all members could defend their people in the event of an assault from their enemies or the cursed gnolls that roamed the savannah.

Yet there were some among them who grew discontent with this: claiming the rigorous exercises and drills were in fact harming their people, forcing them to make more frequent use of water rations and food, potentially deadly in the dry seasons. Vilryn, like many, disagreed with these pretenses, but the voices of dissidence were never blocked out, and indeed began to multiply as time went on. More and more refused to fight, taking to idleness or jobs ill befitting warriors instead. Vilryn, being a senior and well respected warrior, declared that those unwilling to partake in their duty as protectors and warriors to their people, would be put to the sword. A skirmish broke out between them. Many perished, and the schism resulted in Vilryn solely blamed for placing such a deadly ultimatum on the tribe. He was banished, forced to wander the wastes until he eventually settled in Hinatal, making a living in the gladiator pits and arenas in the subterranean levels of the city.

Years later, he would see one of his old tribe mates in Hinatal, though with no apparent knowledge of Vilryn, or the Osmari tribe. Despite his attempts to speak to and interrogate his kin, he fled. Vilryn chased him down and captured him, interrogating him to no avail. Only with the use of many coins to pay for a priest’s aid did he uncover the truth: his tribe had long ago been infiltrated by Seroca, who purposefully sowed the division that caused the schism, lulling them into a state where they gladly took the dark divine’s aid. Now the entire tribe was under his spell, including his wife and three children. Each of them was bound to Seroca’s will, but stripped of their memories and identity. What machinations Seroca plans, Vilryn does not know, but he has since kept the knowledge of the dark divine’s mischief a secret, unsure who else in Hinatal may be under his spell.
