Extract from the diary of captain Thomas Cochrane, on an unnamed island off the coast of Portugal, 28. June 1803
"My decision to set up guards came just in time, because last night our camp got attacked. Never in my life have I seen anything like it, and I am struggling to believe the words that I write. Three walking, moaning corpses came out of the darkness. They ignored the warnings that we shouted at them, and even as we began shooting they made no effort to duck away and evade our shots. With my own eyes I saw one of them get hit in the chest three times in short succession, but he kept walking at me and only a well aimed strike at the head with my sabre finally took him down. Luckily nobody died, but Mr. Lamb got bitten in the arm and is feeling unwell.
We examined the bodies after the battle and found them to likely be Portuguese workers, although in varying states of decay. The doctor says they look like they have died some 20 years ago, so roughly around the time the outpost got abandoned by the Portuguese. I have heard stories of creatures like these, but always shrugged them off as fairy tales. How wrong I was! I pray that there are no more of them on this cursed island.
Mr. Slater did not seem too surprised at the sight of our attackers. I intend to question him and demand to know why he did not warn us if he knew we might encounter these creatures."
