Description
Epicyon haydeni was a massive, extinct canid that lived in North America during the Miocene epoch.
As one of the largest known prehistoric dogs, it belonged to the subfamily Borophaginae, often called “bone-crushing dogs” due to their powerful jaws and strong teeth.
E. haydeni could grow up to 1.5 meters (5 feet) long and weigh over 170 kg (375 lbs), making it larger than modern wolves.
It was an apex predator, likely preying on large herbivores and scavenging carcasses. Fossil evidence suggests it lived in open grasslands and woodlands before its extinction around 5 million years ago.
