Description
Deinotherium giganteum was a massive prehistoric relative of modern elephants that lived during the Miocene to Pleistocene epochs across Europe, Asia, and Africa.
It stood up to 4.5 meters tall at the shoulder and weighed over 10 tons.
Unlike today’s elephants, Deinotherium had downward-curving tusks attached to its lower jaw, likely used for stripping bark or digging roots.
Its trunk was shorter than that of modern elephants but still functional. Fossil evidence suggests it inhabited forested regions near water sources.
