Description

Leptictidium auderiense was a small, agile mammal that lived during the Eocene epoch, around 50 million years ago, in what is now Europe.

Measuring about 90 centimeters in length, it had long hind legs adapted for hopping or fast running, similar to modern jerboas or small kangaroos.

Its short forelimbs were likely used for grasping food, while its elongated snout helped it forage for insects, small vertebrates, and possibly fruit.

Leptictidium had large eyes and a keen sense of smell, suggesting it was active during low light conditions.
