Description
Atopodentatus unicus was a bizarre marine reptile from the Middle Triassic period, around 245 million years ago, discovered in what is now China.
Measuring about 3 meters long, it had a highly unusual skull with a hammer-shaped snout and forward-facing, chisel-like teeth.
This distinctive jaw structure likely helped it scrape algae or soft plants from rocks, making it one of the earliest known herbivorous marine reptiles.
Its paddle-like limbs and streamlined body suggest it was a capable swimmer.
Atopodentatus stands out as a unique evolutionary experiment, showing how marine reptiles rapidly diversified into specialized ecological niches after the Permian extinction.
