Description

Amebelodon fricki was a prehistoric elephant-like mammal that lived during the Miocene epoch, around 10 to 5 million years ago, in North America.

It belonged to a group called gomphotheres and is best known for its unusual shovel-like lower tusks, which were flattened and extended forward.

These tusks were likely used for scooping aquatic vegetation, stripping bark, or digging in soft soil.

Amebelodon fricki had a long trunk, large body, and high-crowned molars suited for grinding tough plant material.

As a distant relative of modern elephants, it represents one of the many diverse and now-extinct proboscideans that once roamed ancient ecosystems.
