Description

Rokurobuki, which means turning or turning neck, is a mythical creature of Japanese folklore. However, they are often confused with the similar yokai Nukekubi.
The Nukekubi completely detaches its head from its body, while Rokurobuki extend their neck.

Rokurobuki have a human-looking body during the day. They usually pretend to be women so as not to attract attention in crowds. At night, the bodies of the Rokurobuki go to sleep, but their heads awaken to new life. It begins to lead a life of its own.

They have the ability to move their head around the house by extending their neck. Rokurobuki have a penchant for licking the oil from lanterns or sucking the blood and life force from the inhabitants of the house. In some cases, they enjoy scaring passers-by by placing their heads on the windowsill.

Rokurobuki are usually the result of a curse on a woman whose love has been spurned. They have either been killed by their husband in their lifetime or have lost their husband in some other terrible way. Sometimes the curse also develops from unrequited love.
