EAN: 5906333790678

Gönüllü (from Turkish gönül – heart) were volunteers serving usually as light cavalry, sometimes due to religious and sometimes financial causes. The armament of the light provincial cavalry depended on the wealth and preferences of individual soldiers. In the case of gönüllü these were mostly sabers, spears and bows. This formation seldom used any other protective equipment besides shields. Gönüllü were used for typical light cavalry tasks such as reconnaissance, screening, and raiding enemy territory. During battles they supported the sipahi by conducting flanking maneuvers and shooting at the enemy with bows. It seems that gönüllü were more eager to participate in close combat than other light horse formations. They were ready for great sacrifices counting on a reward in life or after death.
