Since the Tatar forces were levied from the general population, all segments of the population, including those from the lowest social and economic levels went on campaigns. These levies could not afford good horses, expensive equipment, and their arms were often improvised. The poorest Tatars, dressed only in sheepskin jackets and underarmed, were called kazindji. Poor armament and lack of armor was characteristic of the impoverished masses of Tatars. Only a few had sabers or bows and many were armed only with what they could find – flails, horse jaws on a pole, maces, spears. Such units had minimal combat quality but still could be used for auxiliary tasks.
