Description

Falcatus falcatus was a small, extinct species of shark-like holocephalan that lived during the Early Carboniferous period, around 325 million years ago.

Measuring about 25–30 centimeters in length, it is known for the distinctive, curved, sickle-shaped dorsal fin spine found in males, possibly used for mating displays or combat.

Falcatus had a streamlined body with large eyes, suggesting it was adapted to deep or dimly lit marine environments.

Its teeth indicate a diet of small invertebrates and fish. Fossils, primarily found in the Bear Gulch Limestone of Montana, provide exceptional insight into early cartilaginous fish evolution and Paleozoic marine ecosystems.
