Description
Stegotetrabelodon syrticus was an extinct primitive elephant-like proboscidean that lived during the Late Miocene to Early Pliocene in North Africa.
Belonging to the family Elephantidae, it displayed transitional features between earlier gomphotheres and modern elephants.
This species was notable for having four tusks—two large upper tusks and two smaller lower tusks—a characteristic typical of early elephant ancestors. Fossil evidence suggests it was a large browser or mixed feeder, inhabiting open woodlands and savannas.
Stegotetrabelodon syrticus played a key role in understanding the evolutionary pathway of modern elephants, offering insights into how proboscideans adapted to changing environments.
